Shaun Brown- Founder, Lead Pastor

Pastor Shaun grew up in the Baltimore, Maryland area, but has lived on the Peninsula for over 13 years.  Shaun received his bachelor’s degree from Moody Bible Institution and his Master’s of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary in Florida.  He and his wife Jen, have 3 children - Caleb, Josh, and Lauren.  Shaun loves sports, especially baseball.  He also enjoys laughter and date nights with his wife.  Shaun loves serving God as the pastor of Coastal Community Church.

Andrew Oates- Executive Pastor

Andrew joined Coastal in 2014, bringing 20 years of pastoral minstry experience with him.  He graduated from Liberty University with bachelor and master degrees, and is working to pursure his doctorate.  If you spend any time around Andrew, it won't take long for him to start talking about his wonderful wife Holly, and their four children: Hannah, Will, Grace, and Stone. He enjoys reading, movies, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Executive Assistant- Linda Schrock
Linda is originally from Groton, Connecticut (the submarine capital of the world) and joined the staff as Pastor Andrew's assistant in August 2014. Linda graduated from Katharine Gibbs School of Business in Boston, as well as the University of Connecticut School of Paralegal Studies and has over 20 years of administrative experience. She and her husband, Robb (a retired submariner), have been married for 21 years and have two children, Zach and Meagan. Linda's interests include spending time with her family, traveling, reading and dogs.

Joey Tomlinson- Music & Creative Arts Pastor

Joey has served Coastal on staff in some form since 2005 and joined full-time in 2007.  He is orginally from a small town called Lakeland, GA.  He moved to VA after God called him to ministry.  Joey received his Bachelor's Degree in Religion from Liberty University and his Masters of Divinity at Liberty Theological Seminary.  He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry degree through North American Reformed Theological Seminary.  Joey lives in Yorktown with his wife, Brayden.  He is passionate about seeing people declare truths about God to God through music and continually learning what it means to be a worshipper of Jesus Christ.

Services & Technology Director- Josh Hazel
Josh is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and though his heritage makes him a dedicated Steelers fan, he has spent most of his life here in Newport News. After attending Liberty University for 2 years he transferred to St. Leo University to continue pursuing his degree in Business Management.  Josh has previously served on a church staff in youth ministry and spent a few years as a hotel manager.  He’s been attending Coastal since 2007 and joined the staff in September 2014. In his spare time, Josh likes to read, go to the movies, and eat chicken wings.

Bethany Lay- Operations & Assimilation Director

Bethany grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia where she received her Masters of Religion from Liberty University and met her husband, Chris.   After serving on church staff at two mega-churches for eight years, she stepped back from full time ministry to be a stay at home mom.  It was during this time that God blessed her with the opportunity to become a Professor and Instructional Mentor with Liberty University Online. Chris, Bethany and their daughter Kristin moved to the Peninsula in 2008 and have been at Coastal since 2010 before joining the staff in 2012.  Bethany’s interests include photography, writing and digital scrapbooking.

Receptionist- Abigail Fesmire
Abigail is originally from Lynchburg, Virginia, and joined the staff in September 2014 after graduating  from Christopher Newport University with a degree in Communications. She lives with her husband Eric in Newport News and loves serving at Coastal in administration. Her interests include reading, baking gluten free goods that (hopefully) don't taste gluten free, sports, and anything Disney.

Financial Assistant- Jordan Barnette
Jordan grew up in Ashburn, Virginia, and later moved down to the Hampton Roads area where he received his bachelors degree in Finance from Christopher Newport University. Having a heart for ministry, Jordan joined the Coastal staff in July of 2014 as the Financial Assistant. His hobbies include guitar, music, and tennis.

Facilities Assistant- Sandy Gibson
Sandy grew up in Mount Laurel, New Jersey and graduated from York College of Pennsylvania with a degree in Secretarial Science many years ago. Her home church is Our Lady Queen of Peace but has worked at Coastal for over 10 years. She feels very blessed to have two church homes. Sandy and her husband John have two children, Amber and Brendan. She loves to scrapbook, cook, and spend as much time at the beach as possible. Her favorite food is anything sweet.

Jeff Shrout- Small Groups Pastor

After living in and around the Kansas City area his entire life, Jeff and his family moved to Yorktown in August of 2009 to be a part of the staff at Coastal. He and his wife, Tammy, have been married since 1989 and have three children: Aly, Drew and Amanda, and three grandchildren: Liam, Acelyn, and Macey. Jeff received his Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communications from the University of Central Missouri. He spent the next 15 years in the marketplace and volunteering in a variety of ministry environments and capacities including church planting, middle school ministry, leading small groups and men's ministry. He was invited to take part in a 3 year seminary-equivalent program called the Ministry Apprenticeship Program. Jeff's interests include his wife, people, sports, movies, music and books.

Elaina Rogers- Children's Ministry Director

Elaina grew up in central Massachusetts but has lived all over the east coast from Vermont to Georgia. She graduated with a degree in Children’s Ministry and Music from Valley Forge Christian College (Philadelphia, PA). Since then she has served in full time ministry within the church and on the mission field before joining the staff at Coastal in 2014. In 2011 she had the amazing opportunity to go to 11 countries in 11 months. She traveled to Africa, Asia, Australia and Eastern Europe, sharing the Love of Jesus with kids around the world. In her free time she enjoys baking, photography, tennis, playing the piano and game nights. Elaina is just a big kid at heart and is very excited about serving the Lord here at Coastal!

Early Childhood Coordinator- Janelle Fricke
Janelle grew up in a small town in Nebraska and completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing at the University of Nebraska. During an assignment in Richmond in 1995 she met her husband, Keith. In 2008 they began attending Coastal while doing ministry at a local marina in Gloucester, and relocated to the area in 2012. Using her love for children, she has been involved in various capacities in children’s ministry. Janelle has served in the children’s ministry area at Coastal since 2012, and came on staff in October 2014 as the Early Childhood Coordinator. She loves anything that has to do with being outdoors, from hiking and running to gardening and spending time with her husband boating and fishing.

Josh Schwarting- Student Ministry Director

Josh grew up in the mountains of Virginia near Charlottesville, where he fell in love with Jesus and the outdoors. After graduating from East Tennessee State University, Josh and his wife, Maggie, started a family and have lived in Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and now find themselves back in Virginia. Josh joined Coastal in 2011 and it is his passion to teach students about Jesus by challenging them to stretch themselves through experiences that place them in situations outside of their comfort zone. Josh, Maggie, Jake, Camden, Emma, and Kaleb currently live in Poquoson.

Middle School & College Director- Wilson Bever
Wilson has been attending Coastal since 2013 and has had the pleasure of serving at Coastal full time in January 2015. He received his B.S. in Biology from Christopher Newport University and ran Track & Field for CNU. Wilson and his wife, Baricia, were married on August 31st, 2014 and live in Newport News.

Robert Sepulveda- Missions Director

Robert was born and raised in Bronx, New York.  He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Excelsior College and studied health sciences at New York Medical College.  Afterwards, Robert felt a desire to pursue a teaching career and moved to VA.  Robert currently lives in Newport News with Kelly, his 17 year old daughter.  Robert has been serving as a youth and children’s leader/teacher since 2004 and has been at Coastal since November of 2010.  God has called him to serve those less fortunate and Robert welcomes the opportunity to equip others to seek after the passions that God has placed on their hearts.
